ISSR History

The ISSR was typically convened every four years from its inaugural meeting in Uppsala, Sweden, in 1992 until 2016. The 2020 symposium was canceled due to COVID-19, and the quadrennial series resumed in Córdoba, Spain, in 2025. The ISSR provides a vital venue for scientists and veterinarians to exchange knowledge, present research, and explore advances in stallion reproduction.

Previous ISSR proceedings are available in Animal Reproduction Science and the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science.

Founding of ISSR

The ISSR is a registered nonprofit organization based in Finland. At the 2008 meeting in Gramado, Brazil, then-chair Terttu Katila proposed formally registering the symposium. Katila volunteered to draft the constitution and bylaws, which were subsequently accepted at a meeting held on July 31, 2010, in Lexington, Kentucky.

Terttu Katila, Christine Aurich, and Harald Sieme signed the founding document. Finnish authorities approved the ISSR constitution on May 23, 2012—the symposium’s official date of registration.
